Marton Katz

Márton Katz was a visual artist born in America in 1912. Later his family settled on Máramarossziget, where he studied as a student at the Upper Commercial School in Dés. In Dés, the private school was taken under the patronage of Sándor Szopos. He trained at the painting school in Nagybánya in 1931, but because of his openly pro-communist beliefs he was asked to leave the colony. He continued his studies privately by attending the workshops of Jozsef Klein and Sándor Ziffer between 1936 and 1939. In parallel, he attended the courses of the free school of fine arts in Baia Mare led by the sculptor Gheorghe Manu.

He participated in the group exhibitions of the Association of Plastic Artists from Baia Mare in 1937, 1938, and 1939. From the very beginning, the expressive display of his painting, was characterized by increased use of color. He was a representative of Ziffer's neomodern trend creating powerful, expressive self-portraits, and the urban landscapes of Nagybánya, which show the influence of Ziffer.

In 1941, during the occupation of Northern Transylvania, the fascist Hungarian authorities "incorporated" him into the so-called "labor detachments" and ended up being deployed on the eastern front where he participated in mandatory activities in the front line area on the territory of Ukraine today, where he died in 1943.

The artist is represented in The County Museum of Art at the Baia Mare Artistic Center.
