About

Every Moment is a Memory

Gustav Vilhelm Blom was a Danish painter, graphic artist, art professor and engineer. His parents were doctors, later district doctors Victor Edvard Blom (1823–1883) and Marie Blom (1824–1901).

After graduating primary school in Copenhagen in 1870, Blom attended the Polytechnic School where he graduated in 1876. However, he wanted to be a painter. Supported by wholesaler and art patron Heinrich Hirschsprung, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts from June 1878 to March 1883, graduating as a painter.

Blom was married on 31 July 1888 in Lemvig to Vilhelmine, daughter of a district doctor in Lemvig, Justice Ludvig Gottschalck and Mathilde Eleonore Satterup.

The artist was later associated with the Academy through a series of positions – Assistant at the model school 1884–1909, Assistant at the perspective school from 1890, Associate Professor of perspective teaching 1901–1924, and Headmaster of the building technical school 1908–1924. He also worked as a teacher at the School of Drawing and Art Industry for Women from 1885–1886 and at the Technical Society's School between 1886–1908 as an inspector for the Moltke painting collection from 1887–1930. Blom was also a Controlling Engineer at Copenhagen's Fortifications 1888–1889, participating in the National Museum's investigations of ancient monuments from 1893–1902, and a member of the board of the Massmann's Sunday Schools from 1903–1915.

Blom's artistic activity fell into two parts as he first essentially cultivated the art of painting landscape, and architectural paintings where he could utilize his skills in perspective construction. Blom's technical interests are reflected in his extensive graphic works, where he preferred the etching and the mezzotint and showed especially great skill in the latter.

He was a teacher in perspective in artist circles, his name always closely related to the doctrine of perspective. He was for decades a recognized authority – especially after he had published his dissertation, “The Perspective Image” in 1899. In 1917 he was awarded the Knight of Dannebrog.
