"Fritz Syberg’s life was (also) shaped by profound personal upheaval. He experienced both the bright moments of life and progress, as well as deep sorrow and tragic events that left lasting emotional scars. As a child, he lost his father, and his mother, after being placed in the poorhouse, passed away while Fritz was still very young. This early grief became a recurring theme in his work, a sorrow he revisited and processed through his art over the course of his life. Later, after establishing his own family, Fritz Syberg faced the loss of his wife, Anna, leaving him to care for their seven children, the youngest of whom was just nine months old. Despite these hardships, Fritz Syberg possessed a remarkable resilience—a life force that enabled him to rise repeatedly from the unforeseen tragedies that life brought his way."

Description of the artist Fritz Syberg from the exhibition "Fritz Syberg – WIll to Life!" at the Johannes Larsen Museum, Oct 12th, 2024 – Jan 24th, 2025.

Fritz Syberg was a Danish visual artist from Fåborg born in 1862. He was from a poor background and first served a house painter apprenticeship under Syrak Hansen, the father of fellow artist Peter Hansen. In 1882 he attended the Copenhagen Technical School where Holger Grønvold taught him drawing. After a short period at the Royal Danish Academy in the spring 1884, he studied at the Artists' Free Study School (Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler) from 1885–1891 where he was the first of his fellow Funen artists to study under Kristian Zahrtmann. In 1899 he was taught woodcut engraving by the artist Frederik Hendriksen.
His travels included Germany in 1902, Italy in 1905 together with the artist Jens Birkholm, the Netherlands and Paris in 1908, and Pisa from 1910–1913.
The artist, together with Peter Hansen and Johannes Larsen, became known as Fynboerne, the contemporary Funen avant-garde. They had broken away from the traditions of the Danish Academy to venture into Naturalism and Realism. Alhed Larsen, Johannes Larsen's wife, Anna Syberg, Peter Hansen's sister and Syberg's wife, and Christine Larsen, Johannes Larsen's younger sister were also artists associated with the Funen group. Other prominent artists who joined the group included Olaf Rude, and Harald Giersing who married Fritz Syberg's sister Besse.
The artist received many awards including an Honorable Mention at the Paris Salon of 1900, and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1927. In 1930 Syberg completed 18 large drawings for Hans Christian Andersen's book, "The Story of a Mother."
