Emil Danielsson (August 7, 1882 in Tula, Russia – 16 July 1967Helsinki) was a Finnish painter.
Emil Danielsson’s father Gustaf Adolf Danielsson was from Tenhola from the western Uusimaa region, where he ended up in Turku with the work, from there to St. Petersburg and finally Lieutenant General, Deputy General August Standertskjöld, to be rented by the gun factory in Tula. As a child, Emil and his parents moved to Finland.
As an adult, Emil Danielsson lived in Turku, Tampere and Helsinki during the winter, and in Karku during the summer. He studied first at Turku Lyceum and at the beginning of the 20th century at Turku Drawing School.
While visiting an artist friend in Karkku (Sastamala Finland), Emil became infatuated with landscapes of Pirunvuori Hill and he decided to construct his atelier there. In summer 1906, Emil hired three strong men to construct a stone atelier in a location he had rented for 50 years. Using natural stones from the nearby boulder field (devil's field), a building with thick walls was erected. Stones were shaped mainly with a sledgehammer and chisel, and they were fitted together so well that no mortal was needed. Any remaining holes were filled with moss and sand. The cornerstones were bound together with iron bars. Emil Danielsson (1882-1967) worked with his wife Saga in their stone atelier during summer for 60 years.
To Karku’s Pirunvuori, he built a stone studio in 1906, where he worked for decades and originally lived. The castle is built without joint material in such a way that the stones were designed to match each other with hand tools.[ 2] The artist’s best-known works are landscape paintings, many of which depict the landscapes of Pirunvuori. Danielsson also painted a lot of portraits.
Danielsson participated in several joint exhibitions between 1901 and 1954 and also held a few solo exhibitions between 1910 and 1935.[ 1]
In 1913, Emil Danielsson married Saga Aurora Andelin (1885-1983) from Kirkkonummi. They had no children.
Emil Danielsson died of lung cancer a few weeks before his 85th birthday. Saga Danielsson donated the stone castle of Pirunvuori and a group of her husband’s works in 1975 to the Tyrvää Region Local Heritage Association, which handed them over to the then Vammala city in 1990.
